The 2s class is an introductory preschool class for children ages two years to three years. This program meets Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00-11:30 am. The teacher in the 2s class creates a loving, supportive environment for the youngest students who are learning to separate from their caregivers, often for the first time. The class offers a gentle introduction to the joys of learning, practicing routines and becoming a part of a social group. The class size is kept small—averaging only seventeen children—to help maintain a peaceful, nurturing environment for beginning students.
The 2s begin their day with free choice indoor play at a variety of learning stations, which consistently include messy art, play dough, a building manipulative, dramatic play, literacy, and a light table; science activities are rotated based on a thematic unit. Following a cooperative clean up time, the children gather for Circle Time, which encourages music, sharing, movement, and an overall sense of community. We offer a group snack afterwards of a fruit or vegetable and a cracker, and often times offer something special from the school garden or the morning’s cooking activity as well. After snack, the children enjoy playtime outside, encouraging opportunities to develop gross motor skills using bikes, large building blocks, balls, gardening, and dramatic play. The children return inside to close the morning with story time. The 2s class also take two fieldtrips during the year—to the pumpkin patch in the fall and to Hidden Villa Farm in the spring. Cooking and Science are a regularly scheduled part of the curriculum.
